Wooden spreader replacement

I want to replace the wooden spreaders on my '77 Catalina 30 with the replacements that the factory sells. They tell me that brackets come with the new spreaders and they bolt onto the mast; however, the old brackets for the wooden spreaders are welded on the mast. Can anyone give me any advice? I know I will have to bring the mast down. Has anyone ever completed this change-over with their boat? Is there any special items I need to keep in mind when I bring the mast down. There is currently very little compression at the base of the mast. Thank you.

I did this upgrade...

Randy, I did this upgrade, but I didn't have my spreaders welded to the mast like yours are. I went through Catalina Direct & their hardware matched perfectly with the pre-drilled holes that my original spreaders were bolted to. Once the mast was down, I did the whole upgrade with a socket set. I'd double check to make sure your spreaders are welded. I've never heard of stainless steel being welded to aluminum...In fact, I doubt it can be done, especially for a potentially salty marine environment. Good luck! I highly recommend Catalina Direct's product. Great quality & a good price. Let me know if you have any more questions. Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632
