Wooden Spreader Help

I am rigging a wooden mast and need help with wire wrapping the ends of the wooden spreaders. The wooden spreader ends have a hole that a looped pin slides into to hold the shroud in place. The outside of the spreader end needs to be wrapped with wire to reinforce it. Could someone provide me instructions?

A photo would help. Not sure why the outboard end of the spreader needs to be reinforced.

Does the wire reinforcement serve to prevent splitting? What is the cross sectional shape of the end of the spreader? Is there a means to prevent wear of the spreader by the shroud?
