I am the owner of a 1967 Sailmaster 22. Unfortunately, the wooden mast was shattered while the boat was on jackstands in the backyard. This was caused by a neighbor's tree falling on the mast. The tree is on 2 neighbors' property line and neither is taking any action to rectify the situation. I may have to start a lawsuit and was wondering about how much the replacement cost of this mast would be. I really have no idea. Any help is appreciated. Regards,

Probably have to go to Maine

I used wooden mast for 26 years aboard my Cheoy Lee Clipper. I never had to do a complete replacement of Main or Missen mast. I would think at todays rates even a small mast of wood done right would be 5000-10000 dollars. I know that is a lot of money but they are hand crafted with lots of labor involved. Wooden Boat magazine is your best bet for information and I believe there is a wooden mast builder who advertizes there. Good luck!

RE:

Thank you for the reply. I was afraid it would be that much. The boat itself is only worth 3-5K. It's a shame that this fluke accident happened and now we have a useless boat. Thanks again, and I'll check out the magazine.....

make a claim with your homeowners

Don't wait for your neighbors to take action. Contact your home owners, file, and let them handle the claim. That is why you pay the premium. If you have insurance on your boat, file a claim with them also. This allows you to stay on good terms with your neighbors as you can all blame the insurance companies. After all is said and done, go to ebay and buy an aluminum mast and paint in a woodtone. Good Luck Ian
