from a piece of wood....i.e. toe rails, misc. wood on boat that needs to be
re-bedded, etc. thanks for your help. Patrick

I use a brad point drill bit the same diameter as the plug and slowly drill it out. If you go too fast you will hit the screw head and booger up the slots. I like brad point bits since the center point makes it easy to center the bit on the plug, plus they are made for boring precision holes in wood. You just need glue and a dowel to reinstall them. Cut the dowel with a small hand saw and sand it flush.

I know folks who have used coarse thread drywall screws. Screw 'em in to the center of the plug, it will bottom out on the screw, and then augur up the plug. Or part of the plug. Finish up with a sharp knife blade so as to be able to re-plug.

I like a Forstner bit the same size as the plug- the point stops it at the screw, and the bit cleans up the walls.

Drill with a smaller bit so that you don't chip the sides of the wood you wish to keep. Use a sharp exacto knife to clean up the edges.

I use a standard slot screw under a plug as they are easily removable if the center is drilled into
