The MK1 has wood.
The MK2 has plastic.

The MK2 was introduced "about" 2000 but I can't find the actual date anymore.

I believe they changed the following when they went from Mk I to Mk II.

1) Windows - rounded
2) Wood trim - removed
3) Went to a center post under the mast verses the two posts "bridge" design.
4) Slight change in the hull design above the waterline I think
5) Moved the electrical panel from the port side close to floor -- up ---
starboard side under deck ???
6) Seems like the newer models have vinyl covers over the interior cushions verses corduroy
7) I think the storage compartment on thestarboard side is "finished".

.
The better sailors, sail the MK I's :)

The only things I would like of the MK2 are the lack of wood (less maintenance) and the high mounted electrical panel (much easier to access).

Otherwise, the MK1 is the better version! <grin>

Dunno, there JEP, Verboten and I kicked Mk 1 WKSR butt this summer on our cruise in the San Juans. :D Plus I only have to varnish the tiller. :)

I will say that the dual compression posts from the MK1 would be an improvement in the MK II from a v-berth accessibility standpoint. What a royal pain that sucker is but I understand why they put it there.

Wait Chris, you are comparing a wing keel standard rig mark 1 to a Fin keel, tall rig mark 2? Me thinks that's apples and oranges.

And why was that ?

I have my theories ..

Not to complicate things, but I have a Mark I where the only wood is the tiller! Amaryllis was one of the last Mark I's, so I am guessing some time late in the Mark I production Catalina elimintated the wood.

Hersh, I think they went to the single post because it directly supports the load, plus I bet they can build a lighter coach roof without having to put in a chunk of something to carry the load to the posts on the ends. I also wonder if the loads are heavier?

Why go to the single pole?

My opinion, far less expensive to manufacture. Simple as that.

Anyway -- I like the two pole setup.

Busy weekend; I have 2 parties coming to look at my Capri 22 # 297

One guy said he was representing a yacht club. They dropped a Capri 22 10 ft. onto the ground keel first. I guess the hull is damaged beyond repair. Club's insurance might pick up the tab for something like this. My own experience, I was towing a Capri-18 as we were shuffling boats around after "Sandy". I forgot the mast was up :-(, hit a power line and broke the mast. Club's insurance picked up the tab.

You're lucky it was just a broken mast. We had a nearby MacGregor 26 leave the marina with his mast up. The boat was rechristened "Sparky" and still shows lots of spark burn marks throughout the deck! No one injured, but quite an enLIGHTENing experience!
