Louis, the answer to your first question is walnut.

Since you want the table portable you can use any species you like as long as you don't leave it out in the weather. the answer to your second question is where are you?

Go to a local lumberyard NOT HD or Lowes

and try to find some Northern white cedar. It is light strong and nice looking and durable. Walnut is heavy strong and durable and very nice looking. The cheapest way is a plain paint pine board.

Hi Louis, do an archive search for 'teak...

cockpit table' in the photo forum and you will find pics of the fold out and drop down teak cockpit table I made for our boat. I got the wood from our local lumber store. Terry

Louis, You got a bunch of answers pretty quickly

let us know some more details and we can take you farther along this path. You can make it fancy or plain. I tend towards the Shaker tradition of function has its own beauty. Good craftsmanship and a very functional piece that serves its purpose perfectly is beautiful without being made from costly materials.

Wood and boats. Ah!

We sail fiberglass boat but like to see wood in them. I think is built into our genes. You mention wood and all these guys start salivating. All of a sudden a simple board turns into a designed combination of art and functionality made of fine wood and exquisitely finished. Go for functionality, light weight and easy storage.

How would you define "Nautical Look"?

Old, nostalgic? Proven design and functionality? The thruth is that the items we are replicating today were cheap, utilitarian tools in their day. The cheap, utilitarian items of today are mass produced out of plastic. Somehow I cannot picture that 3-4 generations down the road will be coveting a plastic foldable table wich today sells for under $5.
