Don't even think about it. I replace the wire with 1" SS railing all welded and a gate made of 1/4" SS chain with pelican hook. It always felt very safe to grab it and go forward to work on the boat/sails in any condition.

We have always thought the top lifeline was a bit low. Seems to be about knee level.
We found an idea that works for us. Rather than try to fit a wood rail on the top lifeline, we rig what we call our, "high lines". We bought a red line that we rig from the highest point we have at the bow, to a high point on our upper side stay, then back to as high as we can get it aft.
It's easy to rig when we head out, but we take it down and out of the way when we are at anchor or in the slip.
This was off the Pacific coast of the Baja.

Thanks for that. Did you have to bend the rail into shape ? And if so did you do it or the guy who fitted it ?
