I am in the process of sanding the tiller/hiking stick on my islands 17 and now i ask, what kind of of wood is this? I have assumed it was teak or oak. The wod piece on the keel trunk looks like teak. Can anyone help in identifing so i can treat the correct wood properly

Really? Sorry, it was a knee jerk reaction. We really need more information like some good photos.

Welcome to the SBO forum Werf.
Hard to say what kind of wood it is without a picture.
My blind guess would be Mahogany or Teak, not Oak (either Red or White).

Mahogany looks reddish brown while sanded Teak looks pale orangey, or silvery gray if weathered.
White or Red oak are self explanatory.
