wood grain formica

The previous owner of our 1978 P35 painted over all of the wood grain formica except in the v berth where a cloudy milky looking "film" keeps coming back no matter what I use to try and remove it. Is there a cure for this other than covering with something (1/8 teak) or continuing to paint it?

I think I should have stated my inquiry is the following.

Although I am not a fan of the faux wood look myself, I am in this case trying to keep some of the wood look laminate. What I don't like is the cloudy white "film" which I would like to be able to get rid of without covering the laminate. Is there a solution, cleaner, or other anyone has had success with?

My formica looked like that on the GS 41 I had. Not liking the all painted look (to me like the inside of a refridgerator) I spruced up the "lower furniture" with Min Wax satin finish polyurethane. In the aft cabin I used clear and didn't likt it so much so swapped for stain polyurethane in (IIRC) cherry.
The trick with the stain poly is to stay with the grain, make one pass from bottom to top on verticle surfaces and don't build it up to a solid color.
I painted the higher furniture and bulkheads with an off white acrylic after filling a million screw holes with wood putty and priming.

Forgot that the aft cabin aft bulkhead, I covered with door skin and urethaned with clear satin.

Is my cellphone / tablet that is not seeing images of this contact paper? I have a pooltable I covered years ago to cover dated looking Formica woodgrain. However. A pooltable is a long ways from a sailboat. I would like to see pics.
