wood and tru hull?

why do you have to back a tru hull with wood, i didin't on my boat mind you they are on a flat part of the hull, they never leaked. it seamed the wood would be like 2 more place to have a leak further down the road...

Something to fasten the screws for the flange to and tradition. When your boat was planked with 3/8 inch white cedar an little bit of reinforcement was nice.

Also to have a flat plane on which to mount the thru hull. The wood backing plate can be shaped to conform to the curves.

And in past centuries when a leaked a bit and the wood swelled it helped it seal again.

To conform to the curved hull shape while providing a flat surface to secure the nut or mount the flange. It also spreads forces over a wider area beyond the circumference of the thru hull. Wood is light strong and maleable.

Sometimes at first wetting in the spring launch the wood around one of my through hulls leaks a few drops but then it takes up and stops.
