Went to the Annapolis Boat Show yesterday. Pretty much, 'business as usual'. Almost all of the same vendors as in past years. Same representation of boat manufacturers.
Thursday's crowd was MAYBE a little lighter that past years; but still well attended (for Thurs).
The new Hunter 50CC IS impressive.... even down to it's (standard equipment) full sized jacuzzi bathtub located under the bed in the aft cabin. (The matress folds up to use the tub). More mundane things, like A/C, generator, electronics, autopilot, etc. etc. etc., are options. The boat starts at ~ $419... but realistically outfitted add $100K+.... How many would you like???
I did have an opportunity to talk to Mike Harker for about an hour (sittting on a new Hunter 49). HIS Hunter 49 was tied up at another slip in Annapolis. Wonderful, remarkable guy. He gave a very positive recommendation of the offshore sailing capability of the Hunter 49. (His longest offshore run... 7 weeks, solo, S Africa to Antuguia, during which the boat performed "just great"). Pretty much puts to rest the offshore seaworthness arguments against (larger) Hunters.

Do stinkpot industries count?

Meridian just closed down their largest factory here in WA and one other. My first reaction is "less stinkpots" but then I thought about all those jobs dissappearing overnight.

I wonder how all of those little marinas are going to survive in places like Desolation Sound and the Gulf Islands?

That's what Shackleton and Cook claimed about their boats. Still you don't see many open boats going blue water.

BUT .. Shackleton and Cook did NOT have a Jacuzzi Tub under their aft bunk... indeed, did they even have an aft bunk ?

Seriously thou Bob... how can you argue w/ the fact that Hundreds of Hunters have, and are currently, sailing all over the world; crossing every ocean, and doing so w/o any more problems than other "blue water" boats costing MUCH more ?

There are a lot of boats out there that critics say can not make it. I will leave that decision up to those who dare to do it in their vessel of choice.

Shackleton did have wet cold rocks to sleep on, not very comfortable, but fully mildew resistant.
