Today's issue (Jan. 8) of the Federal Register has a notice from the Coast Guard; they are seeking public input on what to do about Loran-C. The choices are: junk it completely, keep it as is, or upgrade it to "eLoran". Comments will be accepted through Feb. 7. If you care about Loran, this is your chance to make your voice heard. I would put the direct link to the FR page down, but I can't get it to cut and paste, and I don't have the patience to type it all in. The notice is available on the CG's site (which I did attach here).

Just read something in Boat US Magazine...

...stating that the gonvernment has agreed, indefinitely to keep Loran C around...see the Dept. of Homeland Security FY07 appropriations bill (recently signed into law). The next generation of recievers will be eLoran (according to the article)...

I read that too...

however, I would take the FR notice as their current plans. Remember, the article in BoatUS was written probably at least a few months ago. The FR notice is their legal, official position as of January 8. That doesn't mean that the CG will turn off Loran, just that their official position is that they haven't made up their minds and they want public comment. I personally don't use Loran and don't care much one way or the other, but if you have an opinion, it never hurts to express it to the government. btw, its not like I read the FR for fun. Its part of my job to go through the table of contents every day to see if there is anything related to my work responsibilities. This (even though it has no relation to my job) caught my eye, and I thought I would pass it on.
