With regard to bird poop and yellow wasps...

I know that there are a lot of threads on both subjects, but I always like to find out if anyone has any NEW ideas... For bird crap, I use party flags...like the kind you see at used car lots. The only problem I have is that everyone thinks that I'm the PARTY BOAT!!! I do like to indulge from time to time...just wish I could lower the profile a bit. I did have a friend recently suggest using old, useless CD's. I may look into this. For wasps, I'm still struggling. Any suggestions??

mud dobber replant

I have used citranela candles for the last two seasons. I leave the candles open but not lit all week. The summer heat relises the sent and I have no criters in my boat. I use "Off" brand citanela. This may work for Yellow Jakets as well. Jim Honeyman

Were are the wasps nesting?

Tim: I cannot help you much with the bird crap. I don't know of anything other than a shot gun to take care of the bird. The problem with this method is that it is a little hard on the canvas. If you are getting wasps in your sails, you may want to try Pest Strips. I place one in the sail under the sail cover. Hardly had any bugs this spring. I don't know if it was luck of the Pest Strip actually worked?

Moth Balls

I put mesh bags with mouth balls in them inside my sail cover and some lockers. As they evaporate, you can replensish them. Works for mud daubers and wasps. Doesn't discourage spiders though.

Short lived.

Jim: I have also tried the moth balls. The biggest problem was catching them. After that they worked fine.... Just kidding. My experience is that moth balls deteriorate quickly. While the pest strips are $5 each, they seem to last for the season (4-6 mos) and do not have any odor.

Snakes

Try a few rubber snakes on deck. I can't tell you the last time I scrubbed a bird dropping off the deck. Also, moth balls in the cabin seem to keep the mud dobbers at bay.

To Skip and Steve

Skip, maybe I'll try your idea. I tried the fake owl, but the birds just crap all over it (poor thing)... Steve: yes, I tend to find mud dobber nests when I raise the sail (big surprise!!) Do you actually attach the pest strips or pull them out whenever you go sailing. I've tried BOUNCE before, and it actually kind of works...it's just that, every time I raise the main, there goes all of my BOUNCE (always forgeting to pull them out)...nesting season is just around the corner, and wasps can get very aggressive...at the dock, I usually find myself sitting with a can of wasp repellant and that's no fun...

Just stuff them in the sail.

Tim: The pest strips are in a 'Plastic Box' So you can probably attach them to something with a little piece of line. I just place them in the forward end of the sail. This year we had almost NO critters in the sail at all. I do not know if it was the pest strips or the weather but I'll keep putting the Pest Strips in there if it keeps working. Be careful using any of these plastic/rubber snakes. Sometimes they will have a chemical reaction on fiberglass and fabric. I suppose it depends on the mfg and what they use in the rubbery material that they make them out of.

Wasp spray........

Kills 'em dead. Wait until dusk when they go back to the nest, then zap 'em. This stuff shoots a long straight stream, good for reaching far away nests. And when you get good with your aim, you can actually pick them off in flight! Birds - I had a bad time with the cormorants last year. Boat looked like a haz-mat site. Low profile solution - bird spikes - on spreaders and mast head, which didn't solve the problem, until I spiked the boom and cockpit arch. 10 minutes on either end of the trip lashing/removing spikes on boom and arch is well worth it - no more bird crap.
