i find it a lot easier to butt connect and heat shrink when in the water than solder
As my eye sight grows weaker, I tend to screw up the crimp and I don't have a professional crimpers. I tug after the crimp, and too many times it failed. I do the hangman's knot type 3-4 wrap and tug. Is that the bell bell splice?

PS: I did a web search on "Bell Splice" and got "Bella Spice":pimp:

It's a Western Union splice. It is used exclusively for non-stranded wire. For example like the telegraph wire running along the rail roadbed in the Deschutes River Canyon.

a friend of mine was re wiring a boat they had just bought. She found a connection made with two crimped ring eyes, held together with a pan head screw driven through the two eyes, into a wooden section of joinery. :( :(

Western Union splice
Thats it!!!
I figure the Bell splice is Bell Electric or the Tie for a Bell clapper. ( not Bella Spice... ooo la la)

I also learned to twist the stranded wire, tin it, then do the Western Union (Bell) Splice with the now "self stranded" wire. ( not on my boat though).

I have used stranded, WUSplice then, solder, and shrink with good successes on landlubber power cords.
My electrician son-in-law then looked at what I did, and folded my splice back on itself and triple wrapped it electric tape to finalize the mechanical tensile strength.:waycool:
Thanks for new youtube for the Western Union Splice.

a. Get better crimpers. Even inexpensive (probably not Harbor Freight) ratchet crimpers, if properly adjusted before use (test samples before you start) produce identical, dependable crimps even if you are blind. When you tug, something should be damaged, not just pull out.
b. Adjust the crimpers (any crimpers) on test bits.

I recently did some corrosion testing for an upcoming article, and the the results did NOT flatter solder, but rather favored crimping. Standards are based on what has proven best when done properly.
