I have the three cylinder Yanmar engine and am wondering if there is a wiring harness and gauge kit to replace the dummy lights that came with the boat. Would like coolant temp, oil pressure and maybe even a fuel gauge???? Thanks Ron/KA5HZV

Stewart-Warner on my H37C.

Hi Ron, My panel is on the face of the bridgedeck and is an S-W with gauges: tach, water-temp, amps, and oil pressure. Has a real key for the ignition plus the push button. Also has a switch for nite lights. I have never seen their marine catalog(www.stewartwarner.com).

Gauges...

I don't know about kits (with all the items and parts needed for your particular engine) but I know West Marine have the gauges and sending units which you can install on ANY engine.I dit it on my Yanmar. If you want to tack the job, I can send you the parts numbers and prices. They are quite cheap, BTW... alozano@monmouth.com

Big mistake.

Ron: It is a big mistake to REPLACE the idiot lites with gauges. The Yanmar panel has provisions for testing your systems and are very reliable. The gauges are not in front of your face like in an automobile. If you are busy hauling sails or watching traffic you may not notice that a problem is happening. My suggestion is to augment the 'idiot lites' with gauges. This can be done with 'tees'. You will need to retap the water and the oil fittings. They are BPT (british pipe thread) Which is basically non-tapered threads. You can use any of the good quality gauges like the SW or other brands.

I Have been concerned, also.

Steve Dion - I am a new owner of a Hunter 33 and have been concerned about the reliability of the warning lights on my panel. I was also considering replacing them with guages. How do you self test these warning lights?

Hutch: The Yanmar panel actually goes through a test every time you turn on the key. I was advised by the Yanmar service person to not bypass this panel. He indicated that they have seen very few failures of these panels. I think that there is also a switch on the panel to run a manual test. When you flip the test switch the panel lights up if everything is OK. He explained to me how to keep the panel and add the guages. The real problem with the guages is that you are not looking at them like you may be in an auto (they are not right in front of your face). If you are on autopilot and/or watching traffic you are not going to be watching these guages. The audio alters go off before you are critical so it gives you some warning before things go-to-hell. The water temp pickup and the oil pressure pickup are not SAE threads. I believe that they are BPT (non-tapered threads). They need to be re-tapped and then you can place a 'tee' in the line. You can place the pickup on one side of the tee and the guage pickup on the other. He also recommeneed that we did not put the oil pressure pickup on the engine. He said that the fitting is too small. Add a piece of pressure hose to the fitting and mount the pickups/tee on a bulkhead. With this setup you still have the original system with it advantages and the benefits of the guages.

agree with Steve

I agree with Steve, although I have had an occasional problem with the sensors as opposed to the Yanmar idiot lights. On my 33, I installed the guages right below the Yanmar panel, which on my boat is about half way up the cockpit side, beneath the starboard winch. It works great, but I wouldn't give up my lights!!!
