Wireless Wind Instruments

More expensive, less reliable, and a NiCd/NiMH battery that needs replacing from time to time. All that just to save fishing a wire through the mast. Not for me.
I think they're ideal for small boats with no power source...... like the mini compass..... but couldn't justify the price. The advantage on larger boats is that the instrument can be easily removed from its mounting bracket and stowed in a safe place.

We installed the wind instrument only on a Trip33 and connected it to a Garmin 420s GPS and use it on every race to get VMG as well as angle to wind, which in turn helps us to evaluate how we are doing comparing them to the polars we printed out from the ORC certificate.

I've been tempted, but not yet actioned; to buy something like:

Could be great if:
- You sail only in protected waters with heavy seas unlikely;
- Can climb/hoist yourself up the mast without having to hire somebody to replace the sending unit when necessary;
- Find a way to protect the receiving unit from the elements (it is possible);
- Want the to know the wind (and lot's of other weather) just for information (such as I was out today in 35 mph winds without having to reef!), rather than my life depends on it.
$57.99 for a wireless wind and direction device. Tempting to try, isn't it?

They don't transfer data very fast.... so as a sailing tool they are suspect. The $355 Davis product transmits wind data every 2.5 seconds.... so it would be interesting to see the specs on the cheaper units. The other thing is how well the digital display works in bright light. Otherwise it might be worth $60 to see if it is useful....the worst that happens is you take it home and put it outside the kitchen window... I think they're pretty neat.
