Blowin in the Wind

Anyone have any experience with wireless instruments? I really need to update my old tired instruments. I found a company called Tacktic? Anyone know anything about their products? Thanks! Just Blowin in the Wind

Sealed batteries a problem

Recent article in Practical Sailor addressed issue of their batteries not being replacable due to "sealed for life" for water proofing. Supposedly, the batteries have a "life" of about 5 years depending on usage; then, the instrument becomes more less a paper weight. You might wnat to investigate further before buying.

WiFi / Bluetooth Instruments

I had this thought the other day regarding wireless intruments. Wouldn't it be nice if they were more common, utilized a common protocol, and could also wireless connect to your laptop/charting software? I realize that the short range on Bluetooth might make getting the data from your mast top wind transducer a stretch. And WiFi might be too long range, you wouldn't want your competitors monitoring your readings. :) It was just something that popped into my head, and unfortunately I don't have the tech savvy to design a prototype, or the capital to fund a start-up. With my luck, in a couple of years, someone else will be out there making big bucks off the idea. But isn't that something that would be desirable? No snaking wires around the boat? Instruments talking to each other and data collected at a central point for easy use? I'm I being too geeky? T J

Bluetooth has good range depending on the equipment. I have a bluetooth wireless keyboard, mediapad and mouse. I have the computer in the livingroom and can use the mediapad in the farthest room about 50 feet away.
