Any suggestions as how to run wireing down from autopilot to under the cockpit sole on a catalina 30

Try looking at the rudder controls cables. Should be a hole there you can use. On my old Cat 30 there was a cover on the overhead in the starboard birth that gives you access to the rudder cables and pulleys.

So you went down from the top of the pedestal inside it?

YVR,

When I installed mine on a C30 with an Edson binnacle, it was pretty straightforward.

I picked up a grommet & sized my hole accordingly. Using a grommet will keep this weatherproof. I drilled the hole in the front 1" below the fat compass housing (below the interior flange where the top section bolts onto). My unit is an Autohelm ST4000. The only cable is from the motor.

Careful in how you fish the cable down inside the tube staying clear of other cables & steering chain. At the bottom plate where the pulleys are mounted, I secured the cable clear of these with a one hole cable support to this plate. Make sure your vertical run does not have play in it. From there, simply run your cable. Also keep a small loop as shown in the pic as a strain relief.

Here' a pic, happy hunting.........

LP,

The control heat you refer to, do you mean the controller?
If so, I installed a bulkhead mount for a plugin/tie-in for the controller.
Take a look at the pics.

The first pic shows my instrument layout. Look on the bottom lower right showing the bulkhead connector I mounted for the controller. This is before I dressed the cables. All other instruments have bulkhead mount/pugs here also.

The second pic shows my GPS & Fishfinder layout for reference. I did fab the mounting plate for this.

The third pic shows where I mounted the controller on a poly-vinyl fabricated piece I made & attached to the handrail of the binnacle. This was the "dry-fit" before I dressed the cables you see.

The fourth pic shows a top view of my swivel- ready GPS 7 fishfinder. This has allowed me to control steerage from both behind & in front of the wheel.

I NEVER leave my instruments onboard. Weather/UV/moisture & thieves can hurt you. So, I have all quick disconnects for taking my instruments home (fishfinder, GPS, controller). At home, I take the weather covers off & allow my instruments to dry. My autopilot has worked fine since 1993. My GPS & fishfinder swivel for easy view from behind the wheel & for turnable for full cockpit view.

I believe the whole autopilot install took 5 hours. I used bulkhead screw pin connectors for all. To wire your cable to the pin connector, refer to you electrical wiring schematic for color coded pin set. It was a fun project for me.

Looks real good

Ron where did you get the multi pin connectors ?

LP,

I got the pin/weatherproof connectors from Waste Marine. There were three different ones I used depending on the amount of wires in each cable. They have held up for years with no UV breakdown. And, they all have covers to protect them. WM catalog shows the connector I used for my autopilot. Aqua Signal#80100-7. Black polycarbonate. I remember the two other connectors were by Aqua Signal, but I don't see them in the WM catalog.

As for my control head mounting board, no it does not swivel. No need to being angled, I can use it behind or in front of the wheel, that's why it shows up on an angle. The white shelf I attach my GPS & fishfinder instruments to I made myself. I do have a drawing for it if you are interested, just let me know. Depending on the make of your binnacle, you may have to modify it some. All of my connectors/cables/autopilot controller are positioned such as idle hands & feet will not cause any problems.

LP,

as a follow-up, looking at my Garmin GPS & fishfinder, I believe they make the bulkhead connectors as well, or can guide you somewhere. Depending on your instruments, I would bet the manuf. will have info on these.
