I have green-stripe black sanitation hose and have a blockage on the overboard section from the y-valve that has resisted attempts to identify and clear. Because the OB discharge is used so seldom, it is nearly blocked from crystalization anyway, so I have elected to just take the whole thing apart and replace the green-stripe with white sanitation hose for the reason that it is much easier to install with a little heat and some soap. My question concerns removing the green-stripe. Does heating it also make removal easier? I tried one section and it didn't seem to make much difference. I assume the hose has taken a solid set over the nipple. Maybe I should just cut it up and wrassle it off elsewhere? Any hints from you who have been there? Any advice appreciated. Rick Dinon

Don't "waste" the time.

It's tuff enuf installing the new, I'd just wack the old. Cut it out right against the metal on each end. Then slit what's left on the thru-hull and y-valve and peel off. I installed the white during the winter when it was 30 degrees. Took a really big hair dryer and lots of dish soap.

Boil in water

After I struggled with the white 1.5" hose, a kindly soul told me to stick the end you are going to place on the barb in boiling water for a minute. Jeez, I wish I had known that 5-6 fittings earlier. It slips right on. No effort at all. Takes on the consistancy of a super-soft rubber (for about 30 seconds).

Just cut it off...

Use a serrated knife. The article "Replacing Hoses" in the HM forum Reference Library provides some tips that make the job easier. Black hose doesn't respond as well to boiling water as white...if you don't want to cut it off--or don't have room to work--use a blow dryer to warm it. It takes a little time and patience. And btw...K-Y surgical jelly works MUCH better than dish soap. It's water soluble, so it dries out...contains no ingredients that damage hose.

Oh...btw...

Do not use ANY other sealant or caulking except teflon tape on threaded fittings.

Thanks, Peggie

..and everyone. I am just going to whack it. I've done the jobs before, but the white hose was always easier to remove with a bit of heat. The black hose is a bear. The fact that it turns, loops and reverses doesn't help either. Rick D.
