in the event of losing one's mail and needing to sever the shrouds in order to save the boat, are there any suggestions regarding a wire cable cutter. the cable thickness is a bit less than one half inch. one can't be too prepared in this matters! thanks, in anticipation, for any suggestions.

i have an older 45 so i don't know how your standing rigging is fitted to the chain plates, but many veteran sailors have written that when a boat is rigged that the cotter pins should be bent 45 degrees (each leg 22 1/2 from center) and clipped at 1/4 inch. there are two reasons for this. 1; a 1/4 inch, while a substantial meat hook will probably not be fatal. 2; in the event of a dismasting the rigging can be easily disconnected from the chain plates. i took this advice to heart, and while never having had to prove it, -thank god- believe that i could probably have my rigging loose with a leatherman before i could go below and find some elaborately expensive tool. hope this helps

get the toolova shootit! (pyacht carries it) in an emergency, you don't want to mess around, and it's the only tool that will cut large stays quickly-and one handed (you do have to hold on to something). I tested mine and it really works, unlike the other options
