Please list in detail what the procedure is in winterizing Heat Exchanger and Engine on a 2GM20F (18 HP) 1990 Yanmar? I would like info as though you were draining the complete system and staring from new? I can be reached by phone, or I can call. I sent another email earlier asking the same question, but maybe, asking the question step by step may be more educational. Thanks

Joe, settle back and relax a little, and study the system. If you have an engine manual and/or boat manual, look at the diagrams Your heat exchanger which is mounted on the engine should have antifreeze in it from the factory. It is a "closed system" meaning fresh water from the lake and antifreeze (coolant) from the system do not mix. Water comes in through your thru-hull, runs through the heat exchanger, thus cooling the antifreeze that is in the closed system. The antifreeze circulates through the engine, cooling the engine. The antifreeze coolant recycles throught the heat exchanger to keep cool. On my old boat I installed a Tee fitting in the line between the through hull and the engine (close to the through hull) Off the Tee I had a ball valve, and from the ball valve was a clear hose. With the engine running, I stuck the clear hose in a bottle of NON-TOXIC antifreeze (NTA). Now with the new ball valve open, close your thru-hull. The NTA will now be sucked into the system. About one gallon should be enough. If your able assistant can see the wet exhaust, they can shut down the engine when NTA starts coming out. Now close all valves and you are done. Savy?

Joe, It is probably a good time to change the antifreeze in your engine. It is simply a matter of draining the old and adding the new fluid. Your engine manuel should show you where the drains are. Many people change the oil and filter at this time as well. You may also want to repack your stuffing box.

Joe If you do not have an engine manuel I can fax you a copy of the diagram showing the drain locations if you post your fax number. Jim

Jim, thanks for your reply. My fax number is 636-536-6943. The other question I had was, after you have added your 50/50 mix, do you wait till your engine gets up to 180 degrees so that the thermostat opens. Hunter does not install temp gages, so you really do not know, other than using a antifreeze gage to test.Is antifreeze testing done in the cool state or hot. I get different readings on both. Thanks for all your help. Joe
