Winterizing Outboard

My 1992 Johnson 8HP was only used once (1 hour) this summer in salt water.
I plan to flush and fog the engine for the winter. Based on the one hour of use, do I need to still change the gear oil?

If you are absolutely sure that there is no water in the lower unit, you wouldn't need to.. BUT.. that is a very easy and inexpensive task and I would not consider "winterizing" complete without draining and replacing the oil.

Make sure you drain all the gas out of the carburetor assembly. There might me a petcock to do this on yours. Sitting all winter with gas in it can damage it. Are you going to store it in a covered area, garage,shed,etc. If possible store it uprite. Next year before you use it think about replacing the water pump impeller. Fair winds...

If there's no petcock, run your motor (maybe as you're flushing it), disconnect the fuel line, and run it until it kills. If you keep any fuel in your tanks, I would add StaBil and Sea Foam.

My owners manual recommends an end of season gear oil change regardless of how few hours it was run.

I agree with Claude, its an easy and cheap task.

We've had our 1983 5 hp Suzuki 2-stroke for 4 seasons now. I didn't know about annual gear-oil service til this year, so I changed it just before a big sailing trip this summer... and the gear oil was in near-perfect condition... almost indistinguishable from the new stuff.

Caveats - freshwater use only, maybe 30 hours a season, and the last change was professionally done before we bought the boat.

It is easy (but messy) to do, and inexpensive, so it would make sense to do it annually.

Thanks all. Looks like I have to learn to do a complete winterize! Always had the marina do it. Time to save some $. Never done it before, but I will learn. BTW- it is stored indoors and vertical on a stand.

Gear oil change is not hard. If you want to know how to do it, if you don't have a manual, send me a message. Most outboards have the same gear oil setup.
