Winterizing for snow load I own a new Catalina 16.5 (center board model) and I will be storing it outside. I live outside of Philadelphia and would apreciate any guidance that you can give me on winter lay up. I have been told that draping a tarp over the mast (while on the on a trailor) will bend the mast when snow accumulates. I have also heard that the mast should be removed and stored and that I should build a wood frame structure inside of the boad to place beneath the tarp to prevent snow from accumulating.Do you concur with this and if so can you send me a sketch of what I should build. Do I need to worry about the weight of snow causing damage the the hull? Snow is on the horizon. Thanks.

Gotta luv snow

I didn't think you got that much snow in Phili, How heavy is the boat? We have a 15' wooden Snipe that weighs about 300#s and all we do is flip it over onto some wooden saw horses and cover it with a PVC a frame just to keep air circulating and a tarp.Make the horses high enough to put the trailer under the boat and then put the mast & boom right next to it on a couple of those plastic sawhorses. I'm sure we get a lot more snow than you do, and we've not had any problem for the past 2 years.

If you place a couple of sawhorses under the

mast between the existing supports then the span between supports will be shout enough the sustain almot any load. The higher that you can support the mast the steeper will be the slope of the tarp and the easier the snow will slide off.

Thanks everyone. Excellent ideas. One additional quwestion. Should the drain plug in the transom be removed for the winter to allow any water that might find it way into the boat escape? Jim D
