Winterizing Diesel

Winterized diesel last week, now the cold is dropping to single digits, used anti-freeze (nontoxic) for raw water intake, and the green anti-freeze was topped off on the engine. Ran engine, pumped stuff through, fresh water system, ect. Did I forget anything? Should I change oil filter/fuel filters now or in the spring?

Too late to change oil now...

You would have to run the engine long enough to warm up the oil so that you can pump it through the dipstick tube. Unless you're prepared to re-winterize the raw water system (not all that expensive since you are using non-toxic anti-freeze)you will have to wait until Spring. I personnally prefer to change oil and oil filter before winterizing so that the engine spends the winter with clean non contaminated oil. Does not really matter for the fuel filters, unless your primary filter (Racor or otherwise) contains a lot of water. Good luck

I've heard...

some change JUST the oil in the winter, not the filter. Then in the spring both oil and filter. Seems like overkill to me, but interested in hearing if others use this method.

Change before winter layup

I was told to change it before winter layup from a marine mechanic where I bought my boat. And here's an article to confirm it.

Other Stuff

I have a freshwater cooled engine (2GM20F) and I take the impeller out for the winter after I winterize the cooling system/exhaust. This allows me to run the engine a couple of times during the winter. I have a hot water heater that keeps the engine from overheating when I run the engine dry. I change the oil and filter before it gets too cold (this morning it was -2 degrees in southern NH). I also leave the sides of my engine compartment open (along with all the other lockers and bins). Some advocate changing the coolant each year also. I do it every two or three years. Its good to loosen the belts during the winter also.

I agree with Steve

loosen all belts and remove impeller after doing the antifreeze thing ,open all compartments/doors, stand cushions on their sides (circulation). I like to do the oil/filter change before winter sets in.

Fogger a good idea as well

In addition to all of the above, you should spray an engine fogger into the air intake, then plug with a rag - which you must be certain to remove before cranking the engine in the spring. The fogger will protect the cylinders from rust that may result from moisture in the ambiant air in the engine. Look for a fogger made for diesels.

clarified points

Don Casey mentions elsewhere to fog a diesel manually; don't do it when running like gas engines and don't crank it with the starter because diesels will run on fogging oil. Turn the engine over by hand after spraying some in. On the oil changing, my understanding is that contaminated oil has acids not beneficial to sitting engines, and that filter and oil are best changed in winterizing.

Winterizing

I change the oil and all filters in the fall. Also, don't forget StaBil and a biocide in the fuel.
