What are the advantages or disadvantages of wet storage vs. dry storage. The boat is 44' and last spring the bottom was painted with pettit trinadad. The storage will be on Long Island NY.

Wet or Dry

I always liked wet storge. It seems that the boat does not get beat up as much. If the marina your storing at has a good bubbler system and your seacocks are bronze you should be fine. You still need to check on the boat weekly. Look for chafe on the docklines and that the batteries are topped off to prevent them from freezing and to keep the bilge pump alive. Winterize the motor and and other systems as normal. I like using the boat in the winter as a little get-away. A elec. heater and a good book... Downside is basic maint. still needs to be done. You still might find yourself doing a quick haul in the spring to check zincs and a pressure wash for the bottom. Of course you could hire a diver as well.

Storage

I see no advantage to wet storage other than lower cost, maybe. I have a 450 and haul it plus shrinkwrap. If in the water with winter storms high winds etc. the boat can get beat up a bit. I sleep better with it on the hard. Len Fagan "Tale Winds"

What about water intrusion in the hull?

I hear about blisters happening to boats that are kept in the water year round in FLA and other southern climates. Do boats that are kept wet year round in the NE also suffer from these problems? Geof s/v Day-O

WARM FRESH WATER

Is the worst! Good and bad things about both. Water supports your boat better than jack stands. Take your boat out helps the bottom dry out. If the boat is out of the water you don't have check it every week! 50 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other!

Sailing in wintwr

What about sailing in Winter? I am in Boston with a 41 and NEVER took it out of the water . been sailing on Christmas . New year day and most of the we exept in Feb Sometimes you can be on a we cruise totally alone on the water without even a fishing boat at sea .What about when you wake up and find your deck covered with snow or when you have to warn your crew not to touch any rail without gloves . Boats have nothing to do on land
