Have a Cataline 22. 1983. Has anyone stored a similar boat outside in the winter w/ the mast up and "tarped" up? What problems might I encounter?

I don't have an O'Day but if you swing by any marina in the northeast, you'll find the big boys, mast up and covered for winter. Just keep an eye on ice in the cockpit. Some will tell you that even that is no bother. They are probably right, but I'll be safer than sorry.

The big issue is keeping the tarp secured. that will depend on what type of tarp you used and how exposed your boat is to wind. A blue tarp in a windy spot will not last and grommets will pull out in the first big storm. If you are out of the wind, it will last several years. Hopefully, you can do periodic drive bys to keep an eye on things.
You need good stands and a fairly wide base. Also it helps to have the keel in a piece of 'U' channel.
I designed a cradle for my 30 footer and did the sums for wind pressure with 70 mph winds beam on. I was astounded to discover the pressure on the leeward pads could reach 4 tons!
So I put the cradle supports at the bulkheads.

My C&C 26 is on the hard with the mast up in Alberta, Canada.
It's been like that every winter since I brought it to the prairies in 2002.
I don't tarp it!
We get snow and ice from November to April, dropping to -30 or -35 deg C around late Jan early Feb for a week or two. High winds too, funneling through the Rockies.
My cockpit fills up with snow and the deck gets covered.
We also get a few chinooks every winter ( warm winds that melt the snow for a week and then freeze again).
I've never had any problems. Half the owners tarp, the other half don't.
Those that don't feel the tarps do more harm to the gel coat, rubbing in the wind, than the snow and ice.

I have a custom made cover for my Newport 30, it was investment well worth the $$. today it was 32F out when I went to the boat, just plugged the electric ceramic heater in and in no time it was warm and toastie, to work on the cabin of the boat.
Find a local canvas guy to make you a cover, you'll not regret it, also contributes to the resale value of the boat

An 83 C-22 is the original version. Most were swing keel's, so I would assume yours is a swing keel and on a trailer? One problem is the two cockpit drains near the companionway. They will clog and/or freeze easy and won't let the cockpit drain. This can cause excessive water to accumulate in the cocpit, and the weight could damage the hull. Catalina Direct has a kit to install the newer version cocpit drains that correctes this problem on the original versions. When I kept the boat next to the house for the winter, I left a light in the cockpit drain area to keep the drains slightly warm to prevent them from freezing. Other than that, I never covered our 1980 C-22 when I lived in the Kansas City area,(had her for 11 years). Several winters I rented a 10 X 35 storage locker, (that was the BEST!). But normally kept her outside for the winter, sometimes with the mast up, usually with the mast down, never did cover her. It was sure nice to put her away in the storage locker and take her out in the spring all nice and clean! She was always clean, and waxed before she was stored for the winter, and that sure helped spring cleaning.
