Who is into winter sailing? How do you equip yourselves? Any different from summer sailing?

Can't hack it

Part of the fun of sailing is the warm air and wind, and maybe even a dip or two in the water, although it's a tad cold here. I just can't get the same experience here in thje winter, and it doesn't mean the same thing to me. I just wrap up the boat to keep it safe and wait for warmer weather.

Love the winter!

I love sailing in the winter - as long as it is not raining. We get some of our best winds November through March. I just bundle up and have lots of coco on hand.

Take some pictures!

if you've got (or get) a digital camera, take some photos of the cruise and post them here in the Photo Forum. You can write text to go along with it.

Went on sunday

Went sunday, it was fairly cold in the morning, but by mid-afternoon, was a scorching 50 or so...unlike summers in puget sound, there was constant wind ALL day. Layer clothing, have high calorie snacks, hot drinks, dry gloves, a good wind/rain suit (Helly Hanson outlet in Centralia) it was our best day of sailing all year!!

Sailing the desert

With nice weather, we went sailing last weekend in southern New Mexico's Elephant Butte lake. Had extra warm clothes in case something got wet, but didn't need them in 60-degree weather. Got our '94 Mac 26 (classic) up to 5 knots in a moderate breeze, if knotmeter was to be believed...didn't have GPS around to check. Meanwhile, the lake where we sail in summer, Heron Lake near Colorado, is said to be icing up already....4000 foot drop in elevation makes a big difference. Am thinking of getting a cabin heater for use at marina during cool season nights... anyone have any experiences with them? We have 110 & 12 V outlets so we can use dock power. Plan to haul out for January & February for a bit of a break and will be doing a bit of bigger-boat sailing in Santa Barbara in February. Pat
