On another thread I saw a comment about storing a main sail by rolling on a piece of pvc.
Is this a good idea or is flaking and folding still the norm? Thanks.

Depending on the diameter of the PVC, it could result in a really tight bend radius. this doesn't seem like it would be good for the sail shape in the spring. folding does introduce some creases, but not the entire sail.

Very common, and rolling is always better than flaking. No matter how small the diameter, its better then a crease/fold. But not always practical.

PVC is not required, just roll and put in a (long) bag. But to answer your specific question, yes 6" would work well, even 4" would suffice, and help support the length of the sail while transporting.

I roll my main up and keep it in the sail cover. No PVC used, just roll it up nice and easy.

Thanks for the tips. I will make and store it in a sunbrella bag on the ceiling of the garage so will use the PVC for support. Have always flaked it and put it in a sailbag for the winter but this sounds like a good plan.

keep in mind that the worst damage to sails is usually done by rodents, not mildew.

That was the reason for the breathable cover. It will be hanging from the attached garage ceiling and I'll put cuffs on the lines like cruise ships have to prevent any intrusion by animals.

I store my sails in my garage on the top shelf. I roll my sails on a piece of pvc pipe. They are stored in a warm and dry, and (probably) rodent free environment. I wouldn’t think the size of the pipe mattered since it is a larger diameter than folding.
