A lot of people cover their boats in the winter
for the reasons given by John. Many people find that a custom canvas cover pays for itself within a few years when compared to shrink wrapping. If your boat has painted top sides (read that Awl Grip or Imron), you must be extremely careful to not have the shrink wrap touch the paint or the paint is likely to bubble off. There are many local makers of custom covers (talk to almost any awning shop), and a few that advertise in national publications. Many boaters use poly or heavier canvas tarps with some sort of framework below it. But in any case, you will find that your boat will like you better if you cover it for teh winter.
