Winterizing Atomic 4s
Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank, Run engine to be sure that the stabilized fuel is IN the carburator. If your A4 has a heat exchange be sure the antifreeze is enough to withstand the coldest temperature for your area, then minus about 20 degrees. Run engine until warm and change the crankcase oil. Dont let your A4's cooling system 'dry out' ... will accelerate internal corrosion. Drain as much water from the raw water side as much possible, including exhaust manifold jacket, riser pipe and wet exhaust, Get a bucket with 50% Lo Tox antifreeze and 50% water, remove the hose from the inlet seacock and let the water pump suck enough antifreeze and water into the engine so that it totally fills. Then replace the inlet hose and shut off the inlet valve. A 50:50 mix will keep the engine safe down to about -20 degrees F. Have some 'fogging oil" (aerosol can) handy. With inlet water valve OFF, start engine and spray fog into the carburator until the engine sputters/stalls and smokes out the exhaust, shut off ignition, cover the flame arrestor with saran wrap etc. to prevent moisture from entering the carburator. Put a plug into or seal the exhaust outlet. Clean around each sparkplug, remove each sparkplug and put in a tablespoonful of Marvel Mystery Oil, replace the plugs, with the coil wire OUT (so the engine cant start, briefly 'spin' the starter to distribute the Marvel Oil on the cylinder walls, etc. Thats It. The fogging will stop the internal rust on the engine internals, combustion chamber, etc. and will help keep the exhaust valves from 'sticking'. The Antifreeze will prevent 'slab rust' from forming. The fuel stabilizer will stop the formation of gums and varnish inside the small passageways of the carburator. Then gently kiss her and tell her that you will change out her water pump impeller(s), add grease to the water pump before you start her in the spring.
