Time for some of us to start thinking about covers. Last year did the blue tarp over companionway. Anyone have the fancy covers? How much do they run? Is it worth it? Any suggestions? New products?

Trailerpartssuperstore on the web

is where i get my tarps as they are CHEAP and good quality, UV protected. I get white, it looks less nasty than the typical blue. Link below.

Tuu-Tuff Tarp

out of Philadelphia. Much more durable than tradtional blue yet strong enough to last an entire season. I keep my boat covered during the week with a pair of 12x16s that totaled around $30. Best $30 spent all year.

Check them out. They seem to be getting a lot of exposure here. :)

Thanks for links

Good post with some good places to check out as I need a new tarp this year. I have always built a frame and then put a big blue plastic tarp over the boat. I hear lots of people say they tear apart, but I have never had that happen after many years of using them through Wisconsin winters. They usually last me about 3 years. One suggestion I heard about this fall that I may try, is to buy the blue tarp and then buy some of that plastic snow fencing and hang it over the tarp to keep it from blowing around too much. Custom covers are very expensive. I priced them at around 4k for my 34. I tried to talk to the Canvas Store at the boat show last winter. The guy was a jerk. Since I don't have a porduction boat, I guess he wasn't going to waste his time with me. There was a post either here or at Sailnet about a customer that was having a very difficult time getting what he paid for from this dealer.

tying off to the cradle

I cover mine with poly tarps ... sometimes get a bit torn up but that's fine, they're not expensive. Question ... I tie them off in some places to the cradle. Guy in the marina last fall said that was a bad idea, thinking the windage could pull the thing over or something. I thought that was pretty farfetched. Any thoughts? Tom MOnroe Carlyle lake

I once looked into

having a complete canvas cover made for my H28.5. Once was all it took. Seemed like the price was around $2,200 depending on options. I can buy a lot of blue poly tarps for that kind of money.....(nearly 200 of them to be exact)

Tying to a cradle

Tom, I think its the jackstands you don't want to tie to - They could be pulled loose with a snow load on the tarp. Seems like a cradle would be all right. I once did have several lifeline stanchons bend with a heavy wet snow load - something to wathc out for.

Have one on order for a 35 footer. Cut to fit around mast. Zipper access on stbd side. Folds up for easy summer storage. Not cheap but will be cost effective after 3 winters compared to shrink wrap and we expect 8 to 10 years useful life and a mfr who stands behind his products.

Don't tie off to either cradle or poppets.

Safest and simplest is to save up those large plastic jugs that orange juice, vinegar, anti-freeze etc. come in. Fill them about 2/3 full (to allow for expansion when the water freezes), the tie them to your covering tarp at every grommet. Allow enough rope length from grommet to container so it won't bang the ground or your hull in a windstorm. Been doing it this way for a decade now. Easy, reasonable cost, and simple to do.

Top Shop is good

The Top Shop In Kingston made the tarp for my C320 over 10 years ago. Very heavy canvas material. I had to order an extra frame piece last year. Excellent after-sales service. I was finding the weight getting too much to handle, lifting the tarp onto the frame, so I had two extra zippers sewen in to the tarp. I now have four sections that are easy to handle. You might consider getting a quote on that from the beginning, as it should be cheaper.

Buyer Beware

Tim is a perfect example as to why forums like this are such a valuable asset to us. After reading this board anyone who orders from the Canvas Store deserves what they get (or don't get).

Just had one made

I went to outdoor (mast up) storage this year. Had a custom cover made for my Beneteau 323 at a cost of around $2000 which included two trips from the canvas shop to the boat for measuring and installation. I used a shop used by many others in our area because of his good reputaion. I went to outdoor storage this year because it saved me $2.00 per square foot, and nearly a $1000 in cost to pull the mast. This works out to less than a 2 year payback for me. I just pulled all the halyards with messenger lines so they weren't exposed to weather all winter. My game plan is to go indoors every third year to do maintenance over the winter if needed and to pull the mast to check for any wear and tear. With care I think the cover shold last about 10 years.

When I decide to cover Bietzpadlin I

Get a couple of oak 3x3 timbers long enough to stick up past the pulpits. Those get dug into the ground a little and a 3/4 inch polypropolene rope runs from each to the mast. This forms the backbone that supports the cover. Poly tarps are draped over the rope fore and aft and sand bagged down. Plenty of ventilation fore and aft. no matter how the wind blows the hanging sand bags pull everything back where it belongs.

I use 2 tarps

I lower the mast on my C30 every year by myself using a tabernackle. That saves me a little over $400 per year. I have the boat transported to my house and put it up in the driveway which goes back into my yard. Since the mast is stored on top of the boat I made up braces from 1 1/2" PVC pipes and fittings. The braces lay over the mast and slip over the stanchions (I take the lifelines off). I use (2) 20 x 40 blue tarps tied together one on top of the other. This adds a lot of support to the tarp. I also hang old bed sheets all the way around the hull so the blue tarp never touchs it (the hull). I found over the years that the blue tarps scuffed the hull over the winter and it took a lot of work in the spring to get it clean. Now when I take the cover off in the spring the hull looks as clean as it did the day the boat was covered six months prior.
