I am interested in knowing if it is possible to convert the water ballast to a wing or fixed keel. Obviously, this is not a minor issue. Does anyone know if this has ever been done?

Your easiest option would be to sell and get a keel boat. I wouldn't think that adding a keel to a boat designed for water ballast would be sound engineering.

Interesting Question

I am pretty sure that the hulls for the W/B and keel models are exactly the same. If I wanted to consider this, I would contact Hunter Marine, which also happens to be in Florida, and ask them, not if it is possible, but how much it was going to cost. Like you, I was a little dissapointed when I noticed in the owner's manual (page 34) that the H260 W/B has a CE Craft Design rating of "C" - "Inshore" and the H270 keel model has a CE Craft Design rating of "B" - "Offshore". Thats a significant difference for the same boat, except for the keel. Let us know how you make out, Regards Bob.

Yeah, sure it can be done, for a price. Lets see, take the sole off, reinforce the bottom, cast a keel and...cheaper to buy a new 270. Who knows, maybe you can buy just a 270 hull cast and place the old deck, rigging ect. on it. The outside shape of the hull is the same except for where the keel is attached but the inside is completely different. alan

240 in a 270?

The issue is a wing keel of the 240 and not the 270. Once you have a wing keel, more weight to tow and of course more of a pain to launch. This is why water ballast. Dave Condon

Opps, right you are Dave, but still requires a ...

...hell of a lot of work. The hull is not designed for the weight there would need lots of reinforcement. Sell and get another boat. alan
