Are there any techniques that will improve the upwind performance on the shoal keel Hunter 31.

Mine's a 29.5 shoal

But the priciple is the same. Don't get too close in light wind, needs air. Avoid current & tide by getting close to shore.

You can....

....make the bottom of your boat as smooth and efficient as possible. A super smooth bottom with a folding prop and faired keel will go a long way to improving windward performance. Like it or not, racers do all this for a very good reason, IT WORKS!!

Alan's right, do all you can to get the smoothest keel and bottom surface, and if you don't want to get a folding or feathering prop, at least mark your shaft near the flywheel so you know when the fixed prop is in a vertical position. Shift the transmission into reverse with the the prop vertical as a spinnimg prop is more drag and creates turbulence in front of the rudder so you use more rudder to steer, and it is bad for the transmission to free wheel.

Ken, howdy.....

....how the hell do these rumors get started? I thought about a JS9000 and a Cork 1720. At the moment they are simply musings. But it's hard to give up Blue Bayou with all that we have into her and the great rating.
