I recently bought a laptop for use in the boat (Maptech Off Shore Navigator). Now that I have the thing, I don't ever want to ever go sailing without a laptop. Now for the question. Every time I launch a non-Miscrosft program, even from the quick launch bar, I get a friggen dialog box that pops up asking me if I really intended to launch the application. This is very anoying. I've searched my computer for a way to disable this feature but to no avail. Is it possible? How is it done?

the best advice is

Ditch Vista (it sucks) & load XP or buy a Mac! I recently bought a new Windows machine that was a honking pig of a machine with 2gb of ram and a Core 2 Duo processor but the damn Vista OS was using 55% of my total available memory at system idle! I returned it, paid my 15% restocking fee, and bought a Mac! I'll never switch back this thing just works. Oh yeah and spec for spec the Macbook Pro was less money than a comparable Windows machine.

I agree

I agree with Josh. My mac worked great out of the box. And if something goes wrong you can swing by the Apple store and they will get it going free.

virus

and by the way, ask any mac user how many viruses he's had...the answer is always the same...none

Try this...

found on another site: ------------------ So, if you want to know how to turn off the multiple Vista Delete confirmations and Rename confirmations, here goes : * Go to the Control Panel. * Go into Administrative Tools. * Go into System Configuration. * Highlight "Disable UAC" (Disable User Account Control). * Click LAUNCH in the bottom right corner. * This will open a Command Prompt window which should eventually display "The operation completed successfully". * Close all windows and reboot your Vista PC. On reboot, suddenly, Life as you used to know it, will be back. ------------------ Mac fanboys - Offshore Navigator doesn't run on Mac, what do you use? Kevin

I have never had a PC virus, and I will never give Apple a dime! I'm sure that the stock holders thank all of you personally.

Lack of civility

This post once again highlights what is becoming a recurring theme around here - somebody posts a very valid question, looking for advice. The first 2 or 3 responses either degenerate the poster for asking, tell them to search the archive (which thankfully didn't happen here), suggest a non-sequiter solution (get a Mac? He's obviously got a PC and wasn't asking what kind of computer to buy!), or just rant in general about the topic. Eventually somebody steps in to help - but heck, how many good people are we loosing with all the other crap going on? Maybe it's just me... Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer II

sense of humor

lighten up....you pc guys have no sense of humour...maybe that's because your computers don't start up with a smiling computer on the screen. And you can thank apple for pictures , movies, and music on your computer. not to mention web browsers, mosaic...the first web browser...was written for the mac. thank heaven the artists and creative people out there have macs....If Bill Gates had his way we would still have black screens with yellow letters asking for a prompt.

I agree, Dave

way too many people looking to start religious wars. Some one asks for help- at least present him or her with a reasonable solution, not just an expression of your own individual preferences or prejudices my 2 cents

An eternal question likely to spawn a long thread

Mac ads are hilarious. Let's face it, they're an entertainment monster. They know their market. On the other hand, my experience with apples has been that they have as many problems as Gates' boxes if you actually press them into serious work. Most noodge dialogs in previous Windows editions have a check box to say don't show me this box any more. I haven't had to use Vista yet, but Kevin seems to be on the right track. I wonder though if that solution isn't too global. What else will be shut off? The early Macs had a game called 'Roids. I wish I could find that one again.

RE: Lack of civility

I agree, any computer related question is going to spark a flame session between PC and Mac/unix/linux. Hopefully Kevin's answer fixes the problem. I don't have an answer but to some of these replies, I think it's important to note that computers are tools. When you purchase tools, you purchase them according to what you will use them for. The fact is Windows is a better tool for certain processes, while Unix, linux, and Mac are better at others. This is why some people have multiple tools (ie more than one computer). The fact that you are more partial to one... well, congrats!! It doesn't help this guy out at all. The fact of the matter is that whether you like it or not, Microsoft will eventually stop supporting XP, in fact it will happen sooner than people think. This leaves Microsoft operating system users few choices and eventually it is reccomended to "upgrade". I attended a Microsoft tech meeting where they showcased their new software and, as I understand it, this pop-up was implemented to protect the user from accidentally running or protecting against the running of arbitrary code on the machine. Free OS's are awesome, but unless you have the time to learn to use them they can prove difficult to those that want to plug and play on a PC or MAC. So use what operating system that you are happy/comfortable with and use "best practices" to protect your machine from virus's or attacks. I appologize for hijacking this thread. Offshore navigator looks pretty cool, might have to check it out. For those coming out of the cruddy weather on the east coast enjoy this weekend, see you on the water!

Here goes. First,

I'll answer Kevin's question. On my Macbook I run MacENC which is an elegant charting program that has all the bells and whistles of the Cap'n that I used to run on my Dell before it died. Not only is it cheap ($80) but it runs the freebies from NOAA AND they sell a disk for $40 with all the raster charts for the entire US/Mexico coast plus a good chunk of the Bahamas and the eastern Caribbean. For the record, my Dell clunked along faithfully for 5 years so I won't jump on the Windows bashing wagon but I do have to say that the Mac is quicker and easier. Also, ANY Windows program WILL run on the new Intel Macs. Just download the free Bootcamp OS and you can start it up as a genuine Windows machine (no emulation.) I also bought Parallels which runs my XP OS simultaneously with the Mac's Tiger OS. As for those who post with "non-PC (as in politically correct)" opinions, I say, don't stop on MY behalf. I'm not easily insulted. Flame away. Rick

And Dave...

The first 2 or three responses gave more help than your response quoted below! Quote from Dave Crowley, "Lack of civility This post once again highlights what is becoming a recurring theme around here - somebody posts a very valid question, looking for advice. The first 2 or 3 responses either degenerate the poster for asking, tell them to search the archive (which thankfully didn't happen here), suggest a non-sequiter solution (get a Mac? Eventually somebody steps in to help - but heck, how many good people are we loosing with all the other crap going on? Maybe it's just me..." And what help did you offer except to bash others and start more of a food fight? In my response, one of the first 2 or 3 I suggested a fix and that was to install XP and get rid of Vista. This is a fix literally tens of thousands of Vista users world wide have done. In that same post I also told my story about what happened when I purchased a new Vista machine and what my outcome was. Real world advice and real world experiences is that so bad. Read any of the millions of posts on the net about how bad Vista is and perhaps you'll then agree that installing XP is actually good advice unless of course you have stock in or work for Microsoft. Yes I also suggested a Mac, this as I sit here typing on my XP machine, because on a boat a Mac, in my estimation is safer! Why do I think it's safer? Because they don't crash on you or freeze up at the least opportune time and if you're using it as your sole electronic nav aid the fact is the Mac is a more stable platform hands down. I use two differnt Microsoft OS systems and none of them can even come close to the reliabity of my Mac. Sorry it's just true. Hell I wish I never had to buy a Mac because the transition is not without growing pains, and there are things the PC does better, but Microsoft forced my hand with Vista. With a brand new machine I could not even run Photoshop or my CAD software because the systems resources were so bogged down with the new OS! With Microsoft you need to wait a year for them to work the bugs out before buying a new OS. I'm sure our friends from the state of Washington will disagree but the millions of posts on the net back up the current status of Vista as BLOAT WARE! Vista is a train wreck right now and until the hardware catches up it will continue to be slow as molasses and cause software glitches, driver support problems and many, many other issues. Vista will get fixed but it is still to early to make the jump from XP to Vista in my estimation. So Dave is that really bad advice when you offered none??? Rather than slam others try contributing...

It's the CHIP

Ellis you are right, I think that the problem is the PC Chip that these guys are carrying on there shoulder (Pun Intended).

Josh

Josh, You're right, my comments were no more helpful than many others. In fact, I could have added my comments to many different threads, maybe this one just highlighted my frustration. Your suggestion to ditch Vista was interesting, although a bit questionable for somebody who just bought a new PC and may not have the XP CD lying around (as a lot of us techies do.) I was expressing a general frustration and certainly didn't mean to add fuel to an already interesting fire. Dave

Does no comment count?

I though I was doing the right thing (being a linux nut) in not saying anything. Now I find out the I'm suppose to be helpfully. I was just trying to not be unhelpfully which is a completely different color of horse. I would make the observation that Ralph (you remember Ralph right?) bought the laptop for the boat so he must be doing fairly well as that is clearly in the "nice to have but can't afford it this year" category for most of us. I suspect his tech support could handle this for him but he is probably like the rest of us and knows that MS tech support is an oxymoron. Better I think to take an old computer install linux and learn C++. That way WHEN (not if) the salt water gets on it you will not have spent a lot of money on something that can't even be turned into a boat anchor.

Vista

I found the comments about Vista interesting, I'd been wondering about it. I've always heard don't buy the first year model of a car or now it seems computer OS. Of course I readily admit I'm a complete technology idiot. Still can't text message, do conference calls or even forward calls on the office phone, my secretary says theres a button to push but there are lots of buttons. Off subject but a couple of years ago my secretary was on vacation and my partner and I were in the office alone when the copier stopped working, we did everything we know to get it to work and couldn't so we called the technician, he came and put paper in it!!
