Crud. *&%$##@! I had to replace my laptop and the real deal for one came with Windows Vista. I had heard about how much stuff was not compatible, but once I got it to recognize some of it's hardware, it worked fine.... UNTIL I tried to install my old nav software with all my worldwide charts. It loaded all the stuff fine but it just won't open and says there is a problem with the exe file. Duh. This is an old commercial program that is no longer supported, so I guess I'm just toast. Just an FYI. Rick D.

Vista works fine with The Capn.

Rick: I am using The Capn and it works fine with Vista. There may be some Vista setting that you can change with your specific program to make it function properly.

Change Operating System

I recently bought a laptop with Vista and had numerous problems. Finally installed an old copy of Microsoft XP operating system. It was a bear locating all of the drivers for XP to run on the hardware but it was worth it. Now everything works and I don't have to put up with the "New and Improved" system. Bill

Back reving can be difficult

as many HW manufacturers are not writing XP drivers for the new HW. We do this all the time because we refuse to touch Vista before SP1 has stabilized. Tim

Check the archives on the CSBB forum.

Nobeltec v9.2

Nobeltec's VNS and Admiral initially weren't compatible with Vista. However, version 9.2 is available and compatible with Vista. Version 8 and newer should be compatible with your old charts. Rose Points' Coastal Explorer is also compatible with Vista. Hope this helps! Trevor

Follow Up to Foul Up

I downloaded Seaclear II and downloaded the west coast CA charts from NOAA. It may do. We'll see. I KNEW I should have brought an XP machine, but they were charging extra to 'downgrade'. Maybe they knew something we only heard rumored... Thanks for your suggestions everyone! Rick D.

Rick, did you set the compatibility mode

by right-clicking the executable file? This solved the problem that prevented OffShore Navigator from running on my Vista laptop. The solution is documented in the archives.

Thanks, Ralph!

I tried one with XP on which it was running but no deal. I'm going to dial it back to 98 tomorrow. Great lead! Rick D.
