Window treatment

I have recently bought a H-27. The other boats I have owned had some type of curtain or blinds installed. There are no window treatments on this one. I checked around and like most things marked "for boat", the custom kind are very expensive. I calculate that it will cost almost $500 for the major windows (ports). Has anyone faced this problem and found a less costly solution? Thanks, John

A little pricey.

John: Have you check here on the HOW site? The shades for a 18" window are about $52 (smaller ones are cheaper). How many ports do you have?

I had the same problem

when I bought a Reinell 2600 sailboat last year. I had a window that was 50 inches wide and several smaller ones. I purchased a very large accordian pleated blind for a house window from Home Depot and cut it up into several smaller sizes to fit each of the ports. It takes a little work with a sewing machine. BTW, I just purchased a 1983 Hunter 30 in June and have been getting it ready to sail. the Laura Lee made her maiden voyage on the Saturday before Labor day, thanks to all the articles I read on this site including the archives. Thanks to all. I will be making a set of curtains for my boat this winter, too busy sailing right now. PS a Link to the site where I got the idea is included, thanks Captain Al. More info and probable decision

Thanks for the responses. The largest window is 28"x11" and there are five of this approximate size. I looked through the archives after I posted my question ( should have looked there first!) and I think I have found the best solution. I am going to use the small, white plastic hooks that you use for hanging things like dish towels under the sink at home. I plan to attach them to the cabin wall with two sided tape. Then, I will attach elastice cord similar to bungee cords to the hooks using the pull of the cord to hold them in place. This will serve as a flexible travis rod. Then, my wife will sew cafe style curtains which will attach top and bottom around the cord. The flexibility of the cord will keep the curtains against the wall and still make it easy to pull them to the sides when we want outside light. Thought this might help someone else looking at this problem. Thanks, John
