Some sailors are always in the market for a new boat. Many are quite content with the boat they've spent so much time and effort on. Yet most of us regularly scan the boats for sale ads. Why do we do this? The answer is easy if we are truly looking for another boat. But what about many of us who are not currently in the boat market? Why are we looking? Curiosity? To get an idea of what our boats might be worth? To get a look at mods and upgrades? Ot maybe just to look at some more boats? Do you regularly look at sailboat classifieds? If so, why? Tell us about your interests in boat ads and then take the Quick Quiz on the homepage. (Discussion topic and quiz by Warren Milberg) NOTE: Please do not advertise boats for sale in the forums. Thanks!

We like to dream

My first boat was a 25. Had for 1 year. Next was a 30. Had it for 8 years. I was always looking for a bigger boat not really knowing if I was ready to make the committment. I looked for the good deal on a 36 for at least 4 years before I bought. I assume I will not look again to upgrade for some time, if ever but I will probably continue to see what my 36 will go for just in case I have to sell. I like to look at other's boats in the marina and I like to know what a certain brand goes for. This is another reason to read the ads.

Another Life

I am in my late 50's. My well-equipped B390 coastal cruiser is fine for now. In another life, I am considering running skippered charters for stressed-out wealthy executives. That business would enable me to get my daily sailing fix but would probably demand a bigger boat, maybe 44-50 feet. The aft cabins on the 39 are OK but some might find them a little tight. I might also need to upgrade my qualifications and generally get legal. Having a business partner/fellow sailor might also be an option and result in a classier boat. One day.

Always something new

The sailboat industry is constantly in a state of change and improvement. Things I have on my boat now weren't even invented yet when my STARGAZER was new! By looking at the ads, boat shows, and reviews, I try to keep up with developments. Bill on STARGAZER

I like boats

I look at the sailboats for sale ads for the same reason I buy sailing magazines: because I like boats. I don't want to replace my boat and I know I won't find any new equipment or ideas in the ads. I just like boats. I like the history and the science involved. I have ebay set up to send me a daily email update on all new sailboats listed. I just like looking at the pictures. I will occasionally run a search on yachtworld for particular models I like just to see what is available. When I see one of my favorites available at a good price, I may daydream about replacing my boat, but the feeling passes quickly.

I would like a larger boat

Such as a 36 footer. I won't get one because there is no place to put it and most boats do not come with the slip. I just like to dream.

I do it because it is fun although I am looking to upgrade. I love to be more educated about boats for my personal satisfaction. Tim R.

Careful on worth

Hey, just cause it's ;isted at a given price, it doesn't mean you'll get near that on the sale, no matter what the shape. Funny how we all have inflated ideas of worth!

Want to upgrade someday

I love just looking at boats, and even though its going to be a while, I plan on moving up to a larger boat. I also like to see what people are asking for boats simular to mine.

All of the above, and below

I look at the boat ads in every pub I get. And I do it for all the obvious reasons: nice to see what other people are sailing (and selling), nice to what boat prices are these days, and you always learn something new about boating by looking at someone else's boat. And it's a no harm, no foul activity....

Prices

I'm always interested in seeing how my boat compares to the prices of similar ones in the ads. The ads always list boats for thousands more than I think I can get for my boat, if I were to sell it. Why do people/brokers do this? Overpriced boats just don't sell. Good clean used boats, priced to the market are the ones that sell fast.

With an eye to upgrade

I always keep an eye on other boats, not so much the big lavish ones, but moreso the ones that are within my means (price/maintainence/handling). I don't see myself ever going beyond 40' but since my current boat is 26' I figure 30-39 is realistic for an upgrade. If and when the time comes something more beamier than the Macgregor would fulfill my desires, it is a tad skinny.

Ads

I love the ads. Lots of look at, lots to dream about. Nice to see what's out there and what it's going for. You never know when the urge to move up, on, or out is gonna strike.

Capt. Kermie-never say never

I owned and sailed a Pearson 26 for 10 years. Adding 3 new sailors, all under 3 years of age to the crew "forced" a move up to an O'Day 39-(Great boat!). This is the last boat we'll ever have, we thought, why would you need anything bigger? Now after 3+ years, we're dreaming for something like a Jeaunneau 45......dreams are free, that's why we all browse!!! Fun browsing to ALL and Never say Never.

Everyday I look for my dream boat....

you know, that 45-50ft that I want to sail away into the sunset when I retire. Sometimes I find that perfect boat, but its 10 years too soon to buy. I still get upset when its sold and no longer in the internet listings. Nice to dream abe

Reading these posts is educational

and amusing. Nancy and I studied for five years on what we wanted in terms of seaworthiness in a boat. Then we looked for one we could afford to purchase. Then we considered how to make the boat we bought into the boat we wanted. we then spend ten years modifying and up grading a 1968 Islander 30 to suit us in every way. Today we have a boat with which we find no fault. We have friends that have sail a wide variety of boats from classic plastic to 21st century latest technology boats and would take ours in preferrence to any other. It sleeps two will feed four and can provide drinks for eight. We don't look at others except to wonder way they cost so much.

Want to be a sailor

Just looking at possible my first sailboat. Wanted to find out how owners liked or disliked about theirs. I have been interested in sailing for years and have taken advantage of all opportunities to sail.
