Hi All

Does anyone have a set of new window rubbers and inserts available for
sale? I understand from Steve that the VAGB kits are no longer
available and the rubber profile and insert are only available in 100'
lengths from wholesalers - enough for 6 boats! Alternativly does
anyone know of alternatives that can be purchased by the foot or metre?

Failing this does anyone who has replaced their rubbers or fitted the
metal frame replacements have a sample of the rubber profile available
I can use to try and match locally?

Hi David,

Forget the rubber and the frame. Just get two pieces of lexan, cut
them an inch larger than the opening, drill holes, and fasten them on
with stainless steel screws and finish nuts on the inside. Use a good
sealant to bed them to the fiberglass (usually a silicone based sealant
is used -- comes in various colors or clear) It will be stronger than
the original windows, stronger even than the replacement kits you are
speaking about. Just remember to drill the holes in the lexan a little
larger to allow for expansion and contraction. If you are not planning
to go offshore, you could use plexiglass instead of lexan, as it is
cheaper but only about half as strong. Lexan is a brand name of
polycarbonate, which is basically a clear epoxy based material the same
as is used for saftey glasses and industrial safety shields. Very
strong. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a good way to go if I can track
down a supplier of Lexan here (Cyprus).

According to Don Casey in "Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair" Lexan
(Polycarbonate) has 20 times better impact resistance than
Plexiglass. In "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat" John Vigor
recommends using Lexan for Storm Covers over portlights larger than 8
inches, thickness of 3/8 or 10mm. It stands to reason that if your
windows are Lexan in the first place, you wouldn't need the Lexan
storm covers. One drawback -- Lexan scratches more easily than
plexiglss.

Can you clarify it for me...? What is not available? New rubber
surrounds? Or replacement aluminum windows...?

I will buy your windows (especially if there would be a way to
replace glass with lexan), but let me buy boat first. :)

Hi Alex

The kits of window rubbers and inserts cut to size are no longer
available - at least from Steve, and I have been unable to find any
offered elsewhere.

I believe Steve is still making the replacement aluminium windows.

Hi Chris,

in my notes, I have part number, Goodyear 15461 listed.

On my Vega the belts (2) go around the flywheel, dynastart, and an alternator that was installed later.

So the part number above may be for with the alternator installed or with just the dynastart and flywheel.

I goofed up. I was a bit sleepy when I wrote that last email. I was erroneously thinking the belts went all around everything... like cars do nowadays.

There are two belts that only involve the dynastart and flywheel. I think the belt part number I gave is for those belts.

Then, on my engine, there is a belt that goes from the flywheel to the alternator.

ps. on my boat, I set the dynastart belt tension to very loose. This is because my dynastart is old and runs pretty toasty. someone told me that they had that problem and had the bearings chsnged. So I plan to keep the tension light until I get the bearings changed out. These type of starters do not disengauge after the engine starts.

No worries! I understood exactly what you meant . The handbook I have for the Vega gives an AC Delco part #, but very few places in my area carry that line, so I was looking for a comparable replacement part that might be found more readily.

Thanks for the tip about the belt tension. I had not heard that, but you may have saved me from some headaches further down the road!

Not sure if you are asking for the oil filter p/n but here it is anyway.

MD6A:
Current volvo oil filter is 834337.
My boat has an automotive Fram PH3682, but not sure how this compares to the Volvo filter.
