Dear All yamaha owners,

I'm planning to replace the original plastic windows recently. Plexiglass is my first choice but I have no idea about the thickness of the pane. I afraid it's hard to bend the pane to its shape if using thicker one. Can anyone advice me which thickness is appropriate? Besides plexiglass, what kind of material can I choose currently? Thank you so much for helping me.

I used(Yamaha25) 1/4 inch thick tinted polycarbonate, with a black flexible silicone,no leak after two years and, most importantly, when I lose a bit of balance walking I can step on it without been afraid my foot breaks throu the window.

Hi furdui, do you think 1/4 in. (6mm) is too thick? Or just enough for fitting the original opening?

window install

Just did mine with help from a friend that does it for a living. Used 1/4 tinted plexi-glass. Here are a few tips he gave me.

1) The windows expand with heat so you want the window to "float" in it's silicone bed.
2) You can use small furniture bumpers (1/4 diameter dots) to raise the plexi away from the fiberglass window ledge then fill the void with a high quality sealer to insure the window is "floating".
3) Drill your mount holes a bit larger than the screws to avoid cracks.
4) Before removing the protective paper place the window into the ledge with the screws to locate it. Mark the inside window opening. Carefully trim away the outer edge of the inside protective paper and spray paint it. It will give a nice finished look to your installation and hide any imperfections in your silicone caulking.
5) Clean off ALL the old silicone as new silicone does not like sticking to old silicone.

The job is a bit of a chore but you'll really enjoy the view out of your new windows!

That's my 5-cents

Just asked my local expertise and they recommended using 1/4 lexan polycarbonate sheet. I'll check it out first shortly. Thank you for all your valuable experience and I'll report the outcome later.

Besides the window replacement, I'll replace the halyard winch as well. Does any fellow can advise me how is the most suitable size of winch could fit on top of the cabin? I'm just wondering can I replace the old on with the harken 42.2 ST.

Taking away the variables......no excuses

Always a pleasure to hear from you Furdui,
Yes I decided to go for broke ...... and now I am!
The sails were costly but the renewed enthusiasm for the boat is priceless. Now I have to step up my sailing skills to justify the investment - all good things.
The choice to go with plexi over lexan or carbonate was a "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" situation. My friend donated the windows to the cause , I had to provide the labor. He had a technical reason also that eludes me at the moment.

Attached are pics of inspiration and reassurances that even the best get it wrong sometimes!

I have been doing some online research in preparation for replacing the fixed ports on my Y26 also.
Here is a link to a well written comprehensive article in Sail Magazine that discusses both framed and frameless fixed port replacement.
http://www.sailmagazine.com/boatworks/replacing-fixed-portlights

The original fixed portlights on the Y26 are composed of one large and one smaller unit. I have notice several boats that have installed one piece ports with success. I will be following their methodology also. One piece units sure look nice. Another decision is color. I have noticed that many of the newer boats being manufactured are using medium or dark grey tinted plexiglass rather than the lighter tint that was originally installed. I personally think the darker tints look good. I was informed that that the darker tints allows slightly less radiation to enter the boat and for certain provides greater privacy. The darker tints still allow you to easily look outside when you are within the boat. The darker colored material also tends to conceal imperfections in the fiberglass behind the windows making it look like there is just one long continuous portlight.
