Window help!

For a window seal replacement project, I bought the correct seal from a Vegan who had some left over from his project. I got the rubber onto the window opening easily enough but when I try to insert the glass into the rubber the rubber is pushed off the fiberglass. 3 of us struggled for hours with it. I am using silicon lube, appropriate tools etc. I am fairly handy and I can't think what is going wrong. Suggestions? My salon windows are both out and the season is coming up . . .

In the main seal one groove is slightly wider than the other. I am inserting the narrow groove onto the fiberglass. Do it the other way and the rubber just falls right off the fiberglass. Am I correct??Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

Hi Nico

Make sure you have the correct rubber seal, there are two types.... The standard is teh one with the window glass smaller than the hole aperture (Series I & II), the other is for Series III Vegas where the glass is larger than the actual window aperture.

Hello Nico,

As you may remember, I have a Series 3 Vega. At last, I think I have located the correct seal for a window where the glass is larger than the aperture.

I do not have any direct experience with installing the windows on Series 1 and 2 , or 3 for that matter, but I have done a lot of web surfing looking for installation hints. A few of these are copied onto the attached Word file. It is interesting to note that they all put the seal on the glass first and use a string to aid in seating the window onto the frame.

As a note to other Series 3 owners, I have purchased the seal for my boat and it should arrive any day now. The seal is relatively affordable if one ignores the mailing and excise costs. If it works, I would be happy to share the information with others looking for a Series 3 type of seal.

Just a concluding note on replacing a window seal on a Series 3 Vega. Yesterday, my daughter and I successfully installed on one window, the seal that I had purchased. It took us less than an hour to actually install it. This was after taking about an hour to first fit and lock the seal onto the glass. The seal has an integral locking strip. We used the rope method described in a file that I have uploaded earler and a simple awl tool that came with the seal. It worked like a charm. Rather than use soapy water for lubrication, we used a rubber-compatible synthetic lubricant - we anticipated that the soapy water would dry during the process thereby increasing the friction and making installation more difficult.
