hi, msprint 600 windlass will pull for about 10 seconds and then looses power as if battery is drained which is not the case. any suggestions on wher to start? thanks alanmf3j

If you have a volt-meter,
check the voltage at the windlass - you may have a connection that heated up and is dropping voltage after a few seconds. If the voltage is fine at the windlass, could be a motor issue. GT

Motor slowing down
The only reason an electric motor will slow down is: 1) The load is increased (probably not the problem here) 2) The voltage to the motor is reduced Since the batteries are charged there is only one reason for the voltage to get lower, resistance. A windlass draws a LOT of current, if she starts out fine and then slows down there is something heating up and the resistance is increasing. This could be from a long wire run or from connections that are not up to snuff. Operate the windlass for long enough to demonstrate the problem. Then quickly check each connection from + battery through the motor to the - battery terminal. I'll bet one of them will be hot. That's the connection where the power is being lost due to a voltage drop. Have a helper operate the windlass as you check each connection. To check the connection current must be flowing. Put your multi-meter on 1-2 volts and measure from one side of the connection to the other. This is called a voltage drop. I'll bet you will find one or two that have over 1.5 volts drop after 10 seconds of running.

Is this a new install, or has it been working?
Did you just install this windlass? or is this problem a recent development and the windlass has been working just fine before? Does this problem still happen with the engine running? You usually should only use the windlass with the engine running. If this is a new windlass, who installed it? I would double check the size of the wiring to see if the correct gauge wiring was used. Usually, the windlass is wired to the starting battery bank. The wire gauge should be calculated based on the distance from the battery to the windlass and back to the battery. Hope this helps.

hi thanks everyone for imput. upon removal of windlass we discovered a sheared geat shaft. the part alone has a 217.00 list price. i think im going to manually work anchor for rest of season. again thanks alan
