Windlass

Hi and Merry Christmas to all!
I own a Hunter 260 and I am planning to install a Windlass. Has anyone install one on a Hunter 260? I have the West Marine and Defender catalogs , but can not decide which one to use. On this month issue of Cruising World magazine, page 76 , there is an article about how to install one. They cut out the floor of the anchor locker on the bow and do some other work. Please commente on this. Thank you, very much.

Not Necessary

If you need help pulling up the anchor maybe an anchor roller could be installed and then use one of the winches to crank it up.

Not to mention the power requirements of the windlass you'll need a generator to go with the windlass.

Why would you need a generator with a windlass? Every one I've ever owned--or ever seen--has been 12v.

Generator for Windlass on a 260

The windlass is going to draw down the batteries to a point were the charging system on the outboard will not be able to charge them back up without running for several hours. I think you'd need a generator to charge the batteries back up not to power the windlass.

Alberto unless you are elderly or handicapped you should not need a windlass to deploy and and retreive the anchor for an h260. The power requirements of an electric windlass would require a dedicated battery up by the bow or the running of heavy gauge wiring to your battery banks. You could consider a manual windlass but I'm sure is not considered as cool. Save your money for some other improvement. "Ojo al vivo, Boricua".

Here is Another Idea

Hoist a snatch block with the jib halyard run the anchor line through it and use the jib winch.

My wife found solution

She learned how to handle the boat, and I pull anchor.
I'm going to assume your using a line and chain rode - not all chain.
You can also swap out the anchor and replace with a Fortress. Lighter and has better holding power.
In the past, I have been known to carry a 22 pound plow anchor (on my H26). I wanted to deploy the anchor like the power boaters do. Just stop, throw it over and go below. Hard part was in the morning. Took at least two cups of coffee before I was ready to hoist that back up to the boat.
If I were to put a windlass on the boat, it would be a manual for sure - because of the power requirements.

In adverse conditions and single handing a power windlass is a life and boat saver! I have one on my 22' power boat and I intend to put one on my h26 this spring. The power draw is not as large as some would make it out to be, 5 min of engine charging or 1 hr of solar charging brings the battery back. (90 watt solar panel, 65 amp alt)

Small-boat windlass options

ANY help will help. I like the idea of mounting a snatch block on the toerail and leading the rode aft to a cockpit winch. There's no reason this can't be a routine arrangement-- you just have to tolerate the slimy anchor line in a cockpit locker.

On Diana I have an old ('70s) bronze Barlow self-tailing winch, about equivalent to a Lewmar 16, mounted aft of a Windline bow roller on my H25 Mk1. I have not used this yet but with double-braid anchor rode (which is not my first preference) it sould work in the self-tailer with a standard winch handle. Failing that the winch is still a help. There is a big mooring cleat immediately after of it and the deck pipe is already located to port exactly where it should be for a clean lead.

An interesting side note-- the never-used bronze Barlow winch was a 1977 leftover from the Cherubini 44 built for Hunter founder Warren Luhrs. It's been a paperweight on my desk for 30 years.
