We have a 2003 Hunter 356 (built in 2002) which has a Simpson Lawrence Sprint Atlantic Anchor Windlass (vertical drum with two deck switches for UP and for DOWN). It worked fine in April for a raftup but would not work last week. With the power on, if I hit either deck switch I can hear the sound of a relay (solenoid?) clicking in but the motor will not turn over. Tried to call Lewmar but cannot get a human so I sent them an email but have yet to hear from them. Boat is in a place where it is sometimes hard to get qualified techs to come out to work. So I am asking if anyone has had a similar problem or if anyone has any ideas about how I should diagnose this problem. Thanks.

check the resetable breaker under the chart table by the battery switch. When it is tripped a bar pops out of the bottom of it. It is hard to see and easy to miss when popped. Mine will trip from time to time if the chain binds around the gypsy by not exiting into the anchor locker properly. Normally it is because I have let the rope rode pile up with out pushing in down into the anchor locker. Good luck- Mike

First check the solinoids
I have an older SL Horizontal and used to have lots of problems with SL supplied solenoids and replaced several. They kept getting wet inside the housing from , so I finally got a rubber coated aftermarket solenoid and wan the wire for it into the bulkhead for the chain locker, but I put it on the cabin side to keep it warm and dry, and I have never had another problem with it.

I agree with Mike. You will hear the clicking...
..of the relay even though the separate windlass breaker is tripped. This is in addition to, and after any Windlass circuit breaker you may have on the 12 volt elecrical panel. On my H410 it is also under the nave table, and you need a flashlight to be able to see what you are doing..

Simpson Lawrence used a electric motor that was made by a French company by the name of Leroy Sommer. The motors used in the SL Anchorman 800 and 1000 models were problematic (notorious brush problems) and the motor in your model SL may be the same.
If you trace the problem to the motor itself, and you see that it is a Leroy Sommer motor, the solution is simple. Don't bother with Lewmar because they will sell you another L-S motor for $1000++. Instead, purchase a replacement motor manufactured and sold by a dealer in the UK. I don't have all the information at my fingertips, but I do have the name of the dealer and his website.
After having the L-S motor rebuilt twice in three years, I purchased a new motor for my Anchorman 1000 for about $400 delivered by DHL to my door.
Email me from the owner's directory and I will look up my records and get the contact info for you.

Just Brushes?
I needed new brushes after a very short time and read the motor maker's details under the SL overspray. Contacted local agent of Leroy Sommer in UK and bought a new brush carrier and 4 brushes all ready to mount. Cost about £50 ($100 approx).
Much cheaper even than a new motor.
Also, whilst doing motor job take a look in the windlass gearbox. In mine I found the heavy oil was full of minute brass swarf which had come from the large worm wheel, though the wheel looked okay. Cleaned it all out and put in new oil and so we were good to go for another few years.

I have the 03 356 as well and as Mike and Mulf said you will hear the clicking but it won't move. the little bar is probably popped!. simply push it back up and retry the windless. Mine will pop when the chain bunches because of the angle of the locker floor. T
