Windlass on Legend 40

Just installed an Anchorman 1000 electric windlass on my 86, 40 ft Legend. Installed it on deck, centered, directly behind the anchor locker. It works perfectly. The rope coils up in small coils inside the locker which I then move forward to make room for the chain. I spliced the anchor rode to 60 ft of chain with a rope chain splice, it feeds perfectly over the gypsy. The chain just spits out of the front of the windlass, directly into the locker. I never thought I'd be able to get a windlass to operate decently with the Mickey Mouse, brain dead designed locker provided by Hunter. I am pleasantly surprised. Christ, after hauling by hand, and then with a jam prone, slow as shit horizontal manual windlass for the last few years, I feel like I died and went to anchoring heaven.

would like to see it

I also have a 40 legend and am in the market for a windlass. Would love to see a picture of your windlass mounting. What kind of reinforcement did you use. Please e-mail me with specifics. jwsailor@sunherald.infi.net

I've just taken ownership of an 85 Hunter 40. I don't have a windlass. Love to see what you did and see how you did it. I tried weighing anchor in the Hudson River at night with no engine and no wind. I still feel the pain. Gene Kinney S/V Triumph

More interest

I own a 1989 Hunter Legend 40'. I also am interested in learning about windless installations that work well. Pictures would be appreciated. I observed a Seattle based 40 where the owner sawed the anchor locker cover in half, covered both with stainless, mounted the windless on left half, right half still opens. Works well but expensive.
