I'm in the process of installing a Lofrans windlass on Destiny. I had intended to install a sealed AGM battery in the v-berth and to use a battery combiner for charging. I would use 2 or 4 gauge wire from the alternator/charger. I know that many people (including Calder) advocate simply running 2/0 wire from the house battery. The argument usually given is that the windlass battery may become discharged during a difficult anchoring situation, requiring the heavier wire to charge the depleted windlass battery anyway. My question is: how realistic is this scenario? Are you really likely to drain a dedicated battery, with the engine going, in an anchoring exercise - even if it takes several attempts to set the anchor? Seems like the total ampere/hours would not be all that many. The cost of 90 ft of 2/0 wire would be close to what I paid for the windlass *cry The dedicated battery idea seems to have a lot of merit. Derek
