Beneteau 323 Port Dalhousie, Ontario
I made a mistake in not ordering my 2004 323 with a windlass. The problem is that now I am shopping there is a bewildering array of types and styles to choose from. For those of you with 323s what have you found adequate for anchoring in area like the Thousand Islands (east end of Lake Ontario). We visited there last summer and weren't equipped properly for the wonderful anchorages out there. What power rating or style do I need? I have a 10Kg Bruce anchor at the moment, but I am willing to consider another style/weight if it meant better performance. The problem is that here at the western end the bottom tends to be sand or clay, not the bedrock you can run into elsewhere.

look at Lewmar

Lewmar has a new series of anchor windlasses that they introduced last year and priced unde $1000. They are supposed to be owner installable. They might be a good choice. Look in the Defender catalog for examples of others too. The fun part is going to be running the wiring, but the windlass should fit into the anchor well quite nicely, and should have enough pulling power for an anchor of the size you are using.

windlass

I made the same mistake and ordered mine without a windlass. I talked to my dealer and he said they use the Lewmar 900 or 600. What you need is a horizontal type which will bolt on the deck on the back of the anchor well and feed the chain/rode through a hole to the well. The height of the windlass needs to be short enough to clear the lid. I'm looking at the Lewmanr Horizon 900GF which is approx. $850 without shipping. This includes the switch, breaker and the selenoid. Link below is for the details. Sail on... Terry

Oh,

and ordering the right size of gypsie for your chain and rope size is neccessary when ordering. I'm no expert on windlasses, just researching like you. They have different part numbers for different chain rope combo's. Sail on... Terry

Beneteau 331 Santa Cruz
Manual

I have a Beneteau 331 and I installed a SimpsonLawrence Anchorman Vertical Manual Windlass. It works great. No electricity. Fits perfectly. Looks great. Uses standard winch handle. Rope-chain gypsy. I really recomend it, especially if you don't want another electric item on the boat to maintain.

Are you sure you really need one?

I have a 321 and am glad I did not order a windlass. We don't anchor enough to make it worthwhile. Anyway, the anchor is not that hard to pull up. You just need to be patient. I would not want anything else electronic on the boat...

Definitely a luxury on 32"

Having previously owned a B311, there was rarely a time that a windlass was a "need." I used a Bruce that held well, had 30' of chain and 300'of 5/8" nylon rope. Outside of one time in which the anchor got stuck under a stump, not sure that I ever needed a windlass. Seems like a lot of expense and more trouble to run the wiring than will be gained. After moving to a 393 with more chain and a much heavier anchor, the windlass is a definite plus (OK, necessity).
