Windlass

Hi Rob - I installed a Simpson Lawarence Sprint 900 (since replaced with the 1000) in my 1986 Catalina 36. I'm not sure how the anchor locker is configured on your boat, but it may be similar to the 36. I installed the windlass just aft of the locker so the motor sits below deck in the V-berth and the chain falls just in front of the bulkhead into the locker. This simple installation, while perhaps not the most elegant, allows the motor to stay dry below deck and available for immediate inspection. This is just one of many ways to do it, but it worked for me! Take a look at the Related link below for some photos I posted online. Hope this helps, Trevor

Looks really nice, Trevor

Trevor, I have hull #560 and would like to know more details about your windlass install. Can you provide me with some of the specifics, such as what holes had to be drilled, the length and type of wire needed, power usage, etc. Also, did you consider having a drum as well as the gypsy? What modifications were necessary to the stock anchor roller? Thanks for the input. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Innovative

That is a nice set up. I wish I could do something like it.

Factory Install

Here is a pre-survey pic of the factory installed windlass in the achor locker of a 88 Cat 30. It is a rode only, but still works great for doing the majority of the work for me. Jeff

Les - Windlass follow up

Hi Les - Sorry about the delayed reply. I've been busy with the Seattle Boat Show (I work at a small company called The Offshore Store and am exibiting all week). I don't have specific answers to some of your questions (wire and hole sizes) since I don't own the boat anymore. I purchased the windlass at a blowout sale so didn't have the option of the drum at the time. While the drum is a nice feature (the windlass can then be used as a power winch for hauling crew up the mast with use of a snatch block, among other things), the lower profile without it looks nicer in my opinion. The unit came with a template, so the only big holes needed was the through-deck hole for the motor and the footswitch (I opted for power up only, but it would be easy to add a second switch for poewr down). I also had to notch the anchor hatch doors to allow the chain to fall into the locker. Power usage is considerable (I'd have to check Lewmar's site for numbers), but I typically have the engine running when pulling the anchor, so the alternator more than compensates. I have sailed off the hook before in ideal conditions - what fun! I installed an aftermarket bow roller (double) called a "Kingsprit" that required no modifications to the existing stock rollers (apparently sourced from the factory from Toys R Us) - see related link below on the Kingsprit - pardon the cheesy site with awful sound track. Perhaps a little clunky looking, but very functional. Sorry I don't recall more details, but feel free to inquire further - something may jog my tired brain! Best, Trevor
