We just acquired a boat with a powered S-L Sprint 1000 vertical windlass which I am looking forward to using. It has both a drum and a rope/chain gipsy. The owners manual has lots of information except how exactly to use the thing. My dumb question is: when retreiving the anchor, do I feed both the line and then the chair through the gipsy or do I first use the drum for the line and then (try to)slip the chain down onto the gipsy?

Just use the gipsy

The gipsy is ment to be used on both rope and chain. You do need to have a rope to chain splice so it will go through the gipsy. The drum on top can be used for other winching jobs. Bill

Thanks

Thanks Bill. I guess that's why they call it a rope/chain gipsy - Duh! The thing looks like it would chew the hell out of the line, especially under load.
