I am also looking into installing a windvane on my hunter passage 42. I was looking into Fleming. Does anyone out their have any advise or experience installing this type or any type of wind vane off the swim step?

Mike, about three years ago I had a discussion ...

with the Cape Horn folks about fitting one of their units onto our P42. They felt confident there was a way, but until we decide whether to off shore cruise, I prefer the transom the way it is. Our style of cruising PNW waters does not require that type of steering system. Terry

Cape Horn & Monitor

The Cape Horn windvane is very interesting as it is very compact and simple but I don't know how this could be connected. On one installation I looked at there was a second quadrant dedicated to the windvane coupled to the boats steering system. There is a pivot shaft that has to go through the transom and be connected to the quadrant. The Monitor has been very popular and might be one worth considering if the P42 quadrant has easy access. On our HL-35 there is a quadrant cover plate in the stern walk-through and this design is almost tailor-made for the Monitor. One of the drawbacks to the Monior for some boat designs is the number of pullys one needs to transfer the wind vane steering to the helm but with the HL-34 all this can be eliminated and the lines fed directly to the quadrant. No lines messing around in the cockpit, etc. So, if the P42 quadrant is similarly accessible then the Monitor would be really worth considering. Another consideration is that wind vanes need to have reasonably clear air - no enclosed dodgers or other stuff in the way to mess up the wind vane. Monitor makes an extension but the P42 has fairly high freeboard so it may not be high enough. If having clear-air is an issue then going electronic - a vane connected to the autopilot - is an alternative.
