Wind storm damage

A powerful wind storm came through a couple days ago and my Hunter suffered some damage. The wind got the furling sail to come loose and it thrashed about in 90 km/hr winds. The jib is trashed, shreaded in the wind. While it was thrashing about, the clew whipped around and hit the leading (larger) window on the starboard side. The clew, with the SS gromet smashed that window, entered into the cabin and when the wind tried to whipp it back out, the jagged edges of the window cut the gromet clean off the clew.:cry:

So I need a new head sail and I have to replace that starboard window. Any suggestion as to where I can find these items? The window seems to be plexi glass or acrylic, which is tinted.

Any replace a head sail lately?

I can't help with the port glass replacement, but I do have an idea about sails.

You don't mention whether you use your boat for racing or cruising. If the latter, I suggest you get the dimensions of the jib you wish to replace and Google Bacon Sails in Annapolis, Maryland. Bacon is a major used sail broker with a huge inventory. Fill in the sail dimensions on the website form and you'll immediately be provided with a list of potential replacements with price and condition. In my experience Bacon is conservative in its condition assessment. Some used jibs are already modified for roller furler use. You buy the sail on approval...send it back if you don't like it for a refund.

If necessary, you can take the new to you jib to your local sail maker to modify the leach and luff for your roller furler set up. Alternatively Bacon can do the sail mods if any are needed (though if Bacon does the work, I'm pretty sure you've bought the sail)

You'll find this course a lot less expensive than buying new with the very good chance of getting a better quality sail than some bargain basement new replacement. And if the bulk of your sailing is simply reaching form here to there and back again, what do you need a new sail for anyway?

On the lexan, go to a ,marine yard to see if they have scrap lexan which to cut a new window with as a 4 X 8 piece of plexiglass is expensive. You will of course want the smoked lexan. Also try at a windshield shop for suggestions whom to go to in your area.

The closest Hunter repair parts to Red Deer to replace a window would be in Calgary at Glenmore Sailboats Ltd. they are a Hunter dealership and have repair techs that could recommend repair and installation tips.

Windows are Lexan or similar. Don't use acrylic, it'll scratch very quickly. Take the starboard window into a local plastic fabricator and tell them you need a mirror image. If they can't match the tint perfectly buy two. Shouldn't cost much. Maybe < $100.

Yesterday I dropped my mast in preparation for my trip to BC.

When I tried to take the boom off I found that the clip had worked it's way out of the pin and was somehow hanging on. I felt very relieved that it did not let go while sailing.

As I was disconnecting the roller furling from the deck, I was amazed to see the same thing. The clip was gone and the pin had worked it's way almost completely out! It was wedged in and only holding on to one half of the furling clip. One good bump and out it came!! It scared the hell out of me. Two days before I had my wife, son and his girlfriend on the boat for a sail. There was no wind so we just bobbed around and did some swimming. I was dissapointed as it was their first sail. Now I'm considering that it was a blessing that there was no wind or that furler would have let go and ... well I don't even want to think about it.

That storm must have worked those round clips out of the pins. This is a reminder for everyone to check their hardware after any storm to make sure your boat is safe. I know I will be doing a visual check prior to every sail.

What do you folks do to eliminate those round clips from working themselves out?

stainless steel cotter pins vs the circular rings. Make sure you bend the ends back. I suggest this for the boat left in the water for a long time. As for the forestay, I also think it may be loose from what I am hearing.

Dave, I bought a loose guage to check tensions. How do I use it on the roller furling? Is there a way to check the tension on a roller furling?
